"Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love."

These words of St. Thérèse of Lisieux contain a revolution in spirituality.

The Problem with "Big" Holiness

Many souls are paralyzed by the thought of sanctity. They imagine holiness requires great deeds—founding orders, converting nations, dying as martyrs. Since such opportunities seem unavailable, they conclude holiness is not for them.

Thérèse shattered this illusion. Holiness, she taught, consists not in great deeds but in great love—and great love can infuse the smallest actions.

The Little Way

The Little Way is devastatingly simple: Do small things with great love. Offer every moment, every task, every interaction as an act of love for God.

The morning commute becomes a prayer. The difficult coworker becomes an occasion for patience. The tedious chore becomes an offering. Nothing is too small to be sanctified.

Practical Application

Morning Offering: Begin each day by offering everything—joys, sufferings, tasks—to God. "O Jesus, I offer you all my actions of this day..."

The Hidden Sacrifice: Look for opportunities to serve without recognition. Let someone else take credit. Choose the harder task without complaint.

Charity in Small Things: A genuine smile. An encouraging word. Picking up what someone dropped. These small acts, done for love, build the habit of holiness.

Accept Imperfection: Thérèse was not a perfectionist. She accepted her limitations with humility. When you fail, do not despair—offer even your failures to God's mercy.

The Fruit

The Little Way produces unexpected fruit. Those who practice it find that joy increases, anxiety decreases, and life takes on new meaning. The ordinary becomes sacred.

You need not do great things. You need only do small things with great love.
